Synopsis:
Mermaids Against Plastic is a marine conservation film project that reveals the extent of the plastic pollution problem through the eyes of women searching for solutions to protect the ocean they love.
Tamara is from the ocean and water runs in her veins. Born in a fishing village on the Mexican coast, she returned to her roots to become a full time scuba instructor. When she discovers plastic in her beloved ocean, she sets out to get the diving industry to stop using single use plastic.
Director Bio:
Sylvia is a filmmaker, impact strategist, and the Creative Director of Free Roaming Studios, a small production company dedicated to visual storytelling to inspire action. A humanitarian at heart, and creative problem solver by nature, Sylvia focuses on making films that highlight solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems. Her work has screened at film festivals around the world, US Congress, the Department of Interior, and dozens of universities and civic institutions. She made her first short film as a Fulbright scholar, and she received a National Geographic Explorer grant for this Mermaids Against Plastic film project. Sylvia holds an MFA in Film and Media Arts from American University, a Certificate in International Development and Social Change from the Middlebury Institute for International Studies, and a BA in International Studies from Middlebury College. She has taught film at the Corcoran College of Art + Design and the Santa Fe University of Art and Design.
